Donkey Butter

Feeling like I tend to overlook, or straight up neglect, the gems waiting to be unearthed in the downtown region of the Springs green scene, I recently opened up an online search bar and “let my fingers do the walking.” That’s how I found the jewel that is Golden Meds on Pikes Peak Avenue.

If you are not familiar with the spot, Golden Meds is a spacious brick-and-mortar, with a welcoming staff, and a tiered shelf/price flower arrangement. While their online menu was intriguing enough to get me in the door, admittedly, I ended up with a different strain than I went in intending to procure based on first (in-person) impressions.

Going in, I had some of that Midnite on my mind, but when I was checking out their offerings, the Donkey Butter really called out to me, having much better shelf appeal than the online image suggested. When I read that this is something of a rare strain, with a lineage of Grease Monkey crossed with Triple OG — and as the curb appeal certainly signaled this potent and proud parentage — I opted to adopt the Donkey. And let me tell you, dear readers, I was not disappointed. I could sort of tell that would be the case from the jump, as the eighth was absolutely stacked with dense, thick, frosty buds that begged to be bowled without hesitation. So naturally, I obliged. It wasn’t long after I arrived back home with this bounty of beautiful flower that I prepped it for the fire!

The bright, ripe terpenes bring a rich, complex aroma that goes deep into skunky, sour-orange territory. However, those slight citrus notes are puckishly tucked underneath other parts of a fragrant bouquet. Gassy diesel flavors, sumptuously blended with hints of rose, ride the top chords in the beginning of the bowl, laying down a flavorful foundation that actively develops as the Butter burns on.

Later hits played interestingly on the taste buds, with flavors that brought Fruit Roll Ups to mind, which was completely unexpected. Harbinger of the munchies to come? Perhaps. But just as the scents are layered and varied, so too are the pungent tastes of Donkey Butter — all of which quickly made me a fan of this strain.

The Butter is definitely a bit of a trip! Not in a “calling Dr. Leary” kinda way, but more in that modern “that’s one whacky game show” sort of trip. It starts off as a nice, giggly, energetic high that rolls on into a heavy Indica-induced weightiness. It’s almost environmentally transformative as it effortlessly lifts you up and takes you to a dreamy, fluid-like headspace that is creatively clouded and cordially comfy, wrapping around you like a warm, inspiring blanket of Buddha-bidden bliss.
